What are TOOTH FILLINGS?
Tooth fillings are dental restorations used to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay, wear, or trauma. The procedure involves removing the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth and filling the cavity with a material such as amalgam, composite resin, porcelain and cements.
What are types of Tooth Fillings?
Amalgam fillings are made of a mixture of metals, including silver, tin, copper, and mercury. They are not practised now as they are not as aesthetically pleasing as other types of fillings and harmful to body.
Composite resin fillings are made of a mixture of plastic and glass. They can be color-matched to the tooth, making them more visually appealing than amalgam fillings. However, they are durable and are esthetic tooth colored fillings.
Porcelain fillings, also known as inlays or onlays, are custom-made in a dental lab and then bonded to the tooth. They are durable and long-lasting, and can be color-matched to the tooth. However, they are more expensive than other types of fillings.
Cement fillings are typically made of a material called dental cement, which is a type of dental adhesive that is used to bond the filling material to the tooth.Cement fillings are often used for smaller cavities that are not under heavy pressure when biting or chewing. They are also commonly used as a temporary filling until a more permanent restoration can be placed, such as a porcelain or composite resin filling.
The choice of filling material depends on several factors, including the extent of the damage to the tooth, the location of the tooth, and the patient's preference. Your dentist can help you choose the best option for your specific situation.
What is TOOTH EXTRACTION / REMOVAL?
Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. It is a common dental procedure that is often used to treat teeth that are severely decayed or damaged, infected, impacted, or crowded. In some cases, tooth extraction may also be necessary for orthodontic treatment.
How Tooth Extraction Done?
1. Anesthesia: The area around the tooth will be numbed with a local anesthetic to reduce pain and discomfort during the procedure.
2. Loosening the tooth: The tooth will be gently rocked back and forth to loosen it from its socket.
3. Removal of the tooth: Once the tooth is loosened, it will be removed from the socket using forceps or a dental elevator.
4. Closure of the extraction site: A gauze pad will be placed over the extraction site to help stop bleeding, and you will be instructed to bite down on it to help with clotting. In some cases, stitches may also be used to close the extraction site.
After the procedure, you may experience some discomfort, swelling, and bleeding. Your dentist will provide instructions on how to manage these symptoms and may prescribe pain medication or antibiotics if necessary. It is important to follow these instructions carefully to ensure proper healing and minimize the risk of complications.
In some cases, tooth extraction may be followed by dental implant placement or other restorative procedures to replace the missing tooth and restore function and appearance to the mouth.
