Wisdom Tooth Removal : What You Should Expect!!

Wisdom tooth are a third set of molars in the back of your mouth. They usually come in between the ages of 17 and 25, and they're spotted on X-rays.As we age, our teeth can crowd and cause pain. One way to alleviate this pain is to have our wisdom teeth removed. Wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure that most people will go through at some point in their lives. 

While the idea of having surgery may be daunting, the procedure is usually quick and easy. In most cases, you will be able to go home the same day. 

In this article, we will walk you through everything you need to know about wisdom teeth removal. We will discuss the different types of procedures, what you can expect before and after the surgery, and answer some commonly asked questions.

During the procedure, your dentist will make an incision in your gum tissue to expose your wisdom teeth. They will then remove the teeth and any bone that is surrounding them. 
Dentist will give stitches for early healing and prevent infection.After the procedure, your dentist will pack the area with gauze to help stop the bleeding. You will be given pain medication to help with any discomfort. You will also be given instructions on how to care for the area while it heals. 
 
 
After Surgery:
 
Each individual has different response to anaesthesia. If you feel good you can drive and go on your own but if you have undergone general anaesthesia you may feel drowsy. So it is always suggested to be accompained by any family member.
Most people have little to no pain after surgery. You may have swelling and mild discomfort for 3 or so days. Your mouth may need a few weeks to completely heal.
Follow all instructions given by your dentist carefuly.Take medications as prescribed by your doctor.
 
 
Do's & Dont's to be Followed:
 
  • Use an ice pack on your face to curb swelling or skin color changes.

  • Gently open and close your mouth to exercise your jaw.

  • Do not spit after surgery for atleast 24 hrs.

  • Eat soft foods like pasta, rice, or soup.

  • Avoid hot and spicy food for atleast 24 hrs to 48 hrs.

  • Drink plenty of fluids.

  • Avoid touching wound by the finger.

  • Brush your teeth starting the second day. Don’t brush against any blood clots.

  • Take the drugs your doctor prescribes to ease pain or swelling.

  • Call your doctor if you have a fever, or if your pain or swelling doesn’t improve.

  • Don’t drink through a straw. Sucking may loosen blood clots that help your mouth heal.

  • Don’t rinse your mouth too harshly.

  • Don’t eat hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that may scratch your wounds.

  • Don’t smoke. Smoking can slow your healing.

  • Continue warm saline rinses after 2 days of surgery for faster recovery.
