Choose Right Tooth Filling : Facts to Help You!!

Tooth fillings are dental restorations used to repair cavities or other types of damage to a tooth. The procedure typically involves removing the decayed or damaged part of the tooth and filling the resulting space with a material such as amalgam, composite resin, or porcelain.

Types of Filings:

Amalgam fillings also called as silver fillings are made of a mixture of metals, including mercury, silver, tin, and copper.

Composite resin fillings are made of a tooth-colored plastic and glass mixture. They are strong and esthetic fillings which are latest in trends. They are prefered in front tooths where high esthetics are required.

Porcelain fillings also known as inlays or onlays, are custom-made in a dental lab and then bonded to the tooth. They are durable and long-lasting, and can be color-matched to the tooth. However, they are more expensive than other types of fillings.

Cement fillings are typically made of a material called dental cement, which is a type of dental adhesive that is used to bond the filling material to the tooth. They are used in small cavities & also commonly used as a temporary filling until a more permanent restoration can be placed, such as a porcelain or composite resin filling.

The choice of filling material depends on various factors, including the size and location of the cavity, the patient's aesthetic preferences. Some people prefer composite resin for their more natural appearance.

It's important to maintain good oral hygiene habits, including brushing twice a day and flossing daily, to prevent the need for tooth fillings in the first place. Regular dental checkups can also help detect cavities early on, when they can be treated with less extensive and invasive procedures.
